Penfolds
Colour: A deepened crimson with a purple core. Nose: Complex and beguiling, with notes of demi-glace and roasting pan juices, beneath scents of pipe tobacco, vanilla and pencil shavings oak - much more than just a simple varietal offering. Palate: Full-bodied, refined and taut showing dark, black conserve fruit flavours with Satsuma plum notes to the fore. Further liqueur chocolate and spice flavours are impregnated by overt, chewy and ripe tannins. To sum up, the integrated fruit, oak and acid loudly proclaim harmony and balance.
Wine Advocate
Penfolds’ Shiraz lineup is impressive. Leading off is the 2004 Shiraz “Kalimna Bin 28”. Purple colored, it has an attractive nose of smoke, grilled meat, and blueberry. Medium to full-bodied, it is a straightforward Shiraz with loads of flavor, good balance, and a moderately long finish. It is a very good value.
Score: 90. —Jay Miller, October 2007.Wine Enthusiast
Aged in 100% American oak, of all the Penfolds wines it still probably best epitomizes the traditional Barossa style, marrying vanilla and dill with dark cherries, blackberries and chocolate. Mouthfilling and creamy in texture, with a touch of tartness to the finish. Drink now–2020.
Score: 88. —Joe Czerwinski, November 01, 2007.Wine Spectator
Firm in texture, with a chewy edge to the refined blackberry and mineral flavors. Needs time to soften. Best after 2009. 8,000 cases imported.
