Cuve 8a is the identity of specific parcels of slightly younger vines, vinified and matured solely in concrete cuves, and can be enjoyed at a little sooner than it’s ‘grand vin’ sibling.
Chateau Canon Chaigneau Description
Chateau Canon Chaigneau sits at the highest point of the plateau, meaning that we have exceptionally deep soils, running down to the water table. This means drainage is also optimal; water doesn’t ever stagnate nor overbear vine roots, which are free explore the terroir below to their full potential! It’s worth noting that vines are very much like icebergs - what you see on top is a very small percentage of the whole plant. They generally grow around one metre per year below the surface. Our vines are on average 35 years old, so there are a lot of roots down there (!) meaning that they'll absorb even more of the flavour profiles of our fabulous terroir.
Vinous: 91 Points
The 2020 Cuve 8a Beton has more lift and certainly more complexity on the nose compared to the regular bottling. Slightly more tertiary in style, savory perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, black olive and tinged black fruit that define its saline finish. This is an excellent Lalande-de-Pomerol that is worth hunting down.
James Suckling: 91 Points
A medium-bodied red with ripe and mellow dark fruits, firm tannins and hints of dark spices and walnut. Fine tannins and polished texture. Chalky finish.
