A very expressive, intense and complex nose characterises this sunny vintage. The fresh, floral notes of the Cabernet impact significantly on the expression of the wine. The sunny nature of the vintage is beautifully expressed on the palate with a full, generous attack. The powerful, precise tannins are perfectly integrated and harmonious on the rich and silky mid-palate. The mouthfeel is stunning with its completeness, balance and freshness.
Chateau Cheval Blanc Description
Château Cheval Blanc has been situated in the commune of Saint-Emilion for 200 years. It covers 39.5 hectares divided into 55 plots, each of which is different and unique. Each plot has its own characteristics according to its age, size and, in particular, its soil and grape variety. Each plot is vinified separately so that it can express its individuality fully before blending and so that it can contribute to the overall coherence of each vintage.
Château Cheval Blanc has always been managed with longevity in mind: all the particularities of this legendary Bordeaux have been preserved throughout the years – its terroir, grape varieties and style – whilst its qualities continue to become more refined and assertive. Thanks to the mineral and vegetal heritage and increasingly rigorous know-how, Château Cheval Blanc has made a place for itself on the most prestigious tables across the globe for over a century and a half.
Wine Advocate: 100 Points
From bottle, the 2023 Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most compelling wines of the vintage, just as it was from cask. Bursting with aromas of cherries and mulberries mingled with notions of violets, rose petal and anise, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep and enveloping core of vibrant fruit, ripe tannins and a long, expansive finish. It's a blend of 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, drawing on fully 46 of the blocks that make up Cheval Blanc, and it attained 13.8% alcohol.
James Suckling: 99 Points
Blackberry and dark-chocolate aromas with bark, mushrooms, stems, flint, lead pencil and a hint of violets. Medium-bodied with a toned structure from the tight, compressed palate and fine, polished tannins. Extremely long. A blend of 52% merlot, 46% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon.
Vinous: 98 Points
The 2023 Cheval Blanc is stellar, just as it was en primeur. Lithe and elegant, the 2023 is super impressive right out of the gate. It possesses superb textural density yet remains so elegant, so precise. Exotic floral and spice notes weave through a core of red/purplish fruit. Hints of lavender, rose petal and menthol follow, adding myriad layers of dimension. The 2023 is wonderfully vivid, even in the early going. It's a magnificent young Cheval Blanc that will provide many decades of exceptional drinking. Yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare, the highest since 2004.
Wine Enthusiast: 97 Points
While Merlot makes up just over a majority the blend, it is the Cabernet Franc that dominates the taste. Licorice and dark coffee aromas are followed by dense black-plum fruits and layers of dark tannins. It is powerful—a great wine from this top estate that will age well.
Wine Spectator: 96 Points
This impressive red lets warm paving stone, smoldering tobacco and iris hints peek out from behind its prodigious core of cassis and plum reduction, before a cascade of black tea and loam asserts itself on the finish. Broad and deep but doesn’t try to outmuscle the vintage, staying poised and focused through the long finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
