Château Duhart-Milon is made according to traditional Bordeaux methods. The grapes are carefully sorted and placed in concrete or stainless-steel vats depending on their provenance for alcoholic fermentation. Gentle pumping over is carried out during fermentation to optimize extraction. Total maceration time is about 20 days before racking. Following this rigorous selection, the wine is blended and transferred to oak barrels (50% new). Once the wines have undergone malolactic fermentation, they are transferred to French oak barrels made by the Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac. Each barrel is tasted individually in December in order to determine which ones will be selected for the grand vin.
Chateau Duhart-Milon Description
Château Duhart-Milon is a neighbouring property of Château Lafite Rothschild and was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite in 1962. Oral tradition presents “Sieur Duhart” as a privateer of Louis XV who settled in Pauillac in his retirement and whose house on the port of Pauillac inspired the label of Duhart-Milon wines. The 1855 classification elevated Château Duhart-Milon to the rank of the only 4th Grand Cru Classé in the commune of Pauillac.
James Suckling: 95 Points
Good depth, with a fresh herbal touch to the black currants and a hint of graphite, cocoa powder and spices. Layered and integrated, with fine, chiseled tannins, a fleshy core of fruit and a long, ample finish. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. Drinkable now but better from 2027.
Vinous: 94 Points
The 2023 Duhart-Milon was impressive from barrel and now in bottle it has retained generosity on the nose with black plum, mint, cedar and touches of blueberry and blossom in the glass while retaining wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, wonderful poise, far removed from the austere Duharts of old. (Eric Kohler attributes this to the new cellar with improved vin de presse. There is also concurrent replanting of some of the older parcels). Excellent.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
The 2023 Duhart-Milon is showing very well from bottle, wafting from the glass with notes of cassis, violets, orange zest and exotic spices. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's supple and charming, with sweet tannins and a seamless profile that reflects the restructuring and viticultural efforts that have been underway at this estate for some time now. Long and sapid, it's a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot that was picked late, between September 25 and October 3
Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points
The aromas of black fruits are allied to touches of licorice on what is a classic wine from this always improving estate. Pure black currants and concentrated acidity bring the wine its structure and potential.
