Saint-Julien is the smallest of the major appellations of the Médoc, with 910 hectares of vines. It also has the greatest concentration of 1855 classified growths – 11, to be precise. But Henri Martin, born at Château Gruaud-Larose in 1903, believes there is room for one more.
61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 14% Petit Verdot
Chateau Gloria Description
Exceptional and unique estate created by Henri Martin, this vineyard was indeed gradually put together pieceby-piece thanks to the purchase of several plots from mainly classified Growths in 1855. Today, the origin of the terroirs, the care given during the growing and the vinification explain the quality of this wine that is now famous worldwide.
James Suckling: 94 Points
Excellent depth for 2021. Refined and complex with aromas of graphite, cassis, mineral, chili chocolate, white pepper and cigar box. Fresh and juicy, with fine, polished tannins. Long, refined and nuanced. Medium body. Fine tannins. An overachiever for the vintage.
Vinous: 93 Points
The 2021 Gloria, which contains a healthy slug of Petit Verdot (14%), has a clean and pure bouquet with black cherries, bilberry, cedar and crushed violet scents, almost Margaux-like in style. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a graphite-tinged entry. This is quite a "vertical" Gloria, conservative in some ways, yet it does not compensate in terms of precision on the finish, and it feels reassuringly long on the aftertaste. There's good potential here.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The 2021 Gloria has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of cherries, cassis and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless palate built around ripe tannins and nicely integrated acids. It's a charming middleweight that will offer plenty of appeal over the next decade and beyond.
