The appellation is located on the left bank of the Rhône, between Orange and Avignon. Three types of terroir come into the production of this wine: the terroir of the plateau of Mont-Redon composed of large rolled pebbles. Then the Urgonian limestone terroir present in the form of angular white rocks. Finally, the sandy soil of the “Mont-Redon”. Only the very best of these three terroirs comes into this wine’s blend ensuring the complexity and consistency of Mont-Redon’s style.
Chateau Mont-Redon Description
The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry Summers punctuated with the occasional thunder storm. The Mistral wind blows fairly consistently year-round, ensuring very favorable sanitary conditions for wine growing.
Grapes are harvested at the perfect maturity following validation through tasting of the grapes. Harvest is always manual, allowing for precise sorting of each bunch in the vineyard. This selection is supplemented through the use of optical sorting tables. Cameras perform grape by grape selection, excluding any unwanted parts for a work of great precision.
Following complete de-stemming, extraction is done by punching-down for fifteen to twenty days to obtain the optimal extraction of tannins and colour from the skins. Once the malolactic fermentations are completed in vats, a second selection is performed. Batches which do not meet our criteria are sold in bulk. The best tanks are kept for maturing done approximately 50% in barrels and 50 % in vats. After one year of ageing, only the batches which allow for the best possible blend (those with the most depth and harmony) are selected. To extract the quintessence of our vines, the proportion of bulk can vary greatly depending on the vintage. Bottling is done about 18 months following harvest. Bottled wine then rests for at least 4 to 6 months in our cellars before shipping starts.
James Suckling: 96 Points
A well-composed, structured and refined Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The nose reveals notes of dark cherries, cassis, dried thyme, black pepper and a touch of violets. It's full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. The frame of tannins shape up the palate, with dark berries at the core. Plenty of spices and grilled herb character on the palate bring vibrancy and drive. Robust and focused, and the funneled finish has length.
Vinous: 92 Points
Blending 55% Grenache with 33% Syrah and 12% Mourvedre, the 2022 Chateauneuf-du-Pape packs distinct licorice, gravel, red cherry and violet notes alongside minty undertones. Constructed around a firm tannic core, the full-bodied 2022 is clearly built for the long haul. Despite the marked tannins, there is an overall elegance here that I applaud.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
Aromas of violet, dark wild berries, lavender and smoke preface the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Mont Redon, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and structured wine with an assertive tannic frame, velvety tannins and a long and spicy finish. Mainly Grenache Noir with Syrah, Mourvèdre and other authorized grapes, it's matured only 8% in new barrels and the rest in a combination of used barrels and foudres.
