2022 is a vintage of myriad emotions: the hallmark opulence of Cos d’Estournel is a magnificent counterpoint to the vintage’s diaphanous quality and a freshness that is somewhat unexpected in light of the year’s unusual weather. The wine’s characteristic intensity complements a voluptuous aromatic palette that includes the freshness of graphite and white pepper, the elegance of tea, and sweet notes of licorice, cherry, and blackberry. With an incredibly refined texture that is not without evoking the feel of cashmere, Cos d’Estournel 2022 is an utterly captivating wine with a seemingly endless finish and exceptional aging potential.
61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Cos d'Estournel Description
As mysterious and intriguing as a lone adventurer returning from a solitary sail, Cos d’Estournel is slow to reveal itself. Little by little, it evokes stories of distant places, market stalls brimming with unfamiliar fruits, spices and wares, village festivities warmed by the joy of revelers and the setting sun, and sumptuous visions of ladies and their voluptuous curves. A myriad of scents, colors and tastes appeals to the senses. The Grand Vin of Cos d’Estournel is both demure and deliberately sensuous, a fascinating and elegant nectar.
James Suckling: 99 Points
Wow. So intense and spicy with nutmeg, cloves, ink and blackberries. Also asphalt, lead pencil and tobacco. Full-bodied, but at the same time, there’s a real balance giving incredible depth and length. The tannins are all there but are polished as well as firm. Superb structure. A neoclassical Cos, one for long-term aging. Perhaps the best ever. A blend of 61% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, 1% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
Wine Enthusiast: 98 Points
The qualities of the 2022 vintage have been good to Cos d'Estournel. Freshness and black fruits have lightened the tannins into a fine and juicy wine. The result is impressive—a superb, generous and structured wine that is one of the best from the estate for many years.
Vinous: 97 Points
The 2022 Cos d'Estournel is a huge wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its finest. Dense, rich and explosive, the 2022 represents the essence of opulence. Sumptuous curves wrap around a core of blackberry cloves, new leather, licorice and espresso that screams out of the glass. The 2022 is a wild, exotic beauty. All it needs is time.
Wine Spectator: 97 Points
This is deep, dark and a bit brooding in feel, with layers of warm and well-steeped dark currant, blackberry and fig fruit. Married to a structure that's plush and nicely inlaid, while sweet tobacco, bay leaf, tar and chestnut notes add impressive range. The long finish pulls in a warm paving stone detail to seal the deal. Impressive indeed. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
Wine Advocate: 95 Points
The 2022 Cos d'Estournel unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, plum liqueur and rich spices, followed by a full-bodied, broad-shouldered and muscular palate that's rich and structured, with a ripe core of fruit and chewy tannins. Harvest dates were relatively early this year, and maturation is occurring in only 50% new oak; yet the 2022's chunky, glass-staining style makes it Ducru Beaucaillou's only rival for the title of most extracted second growth of the Médoc.
