Giovanni Manzone Description
A full and balanced red wine, made from Nebbiolo grapes handled and vinified by Manzone Giovanni, in Langhe land. The grapes come from a single vineyard, in the Gramolere mga, in Monforte d’Alba. The vines are about 35 years old and the steep slope of the hill only allows manual processing. The exposure is south-southwest; the soil is sandy and rich in stones and fossils. The manual harvest is made in mid/late october to ensure the perfect ripening of the grapes. The natural fermentation with the skins lasts 30 to 40 days, with soft pumping over to guarantee a delicate polyphenolic extraction. After about 3 years of ageing in barrels and a few months resting in concrete tanks, the wine is bottled during waning moon. The first vintage was produced in 1971. Few thousand bottles of Barolo Gramolere are produced and sold about 5 years after the harvest.
Vinous: 94 Points
The 2016 Barolo Gramolere is an exquisite wine. It's a Barolo that speaks to finesse and class more than anything else. Pulsating tannins drive a core of sweet red fruit, mint, spice and blood orange, with strong mineral accents that keep everything lively. Bright acids and a spine of tannin shape the long, beautifully persistent finish as the wine fleshes out with time in the glass.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
The Manzone 2016 Barolo Riserva Gramolere shows a very polished and tight set of aromas while also offering pretty intensity. Compared to the 2019 Barolo Gramolere released at the same time, this Riserva is slightly more aged, but not by much, and the wine has superior balance overall. You still get an extra dose of oak spice, but the overlap is smoother in the case of this bottle.
James Suckling: 92 Points
A finely textured 2016 Barolo, showing cherries, berries and mild hazelnuts with just a hint of citrus. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Really builds on the palate. Drink after 2022.
