The Lodge Hill Shiraz, on the Clare Valley’s eastern ranges, has soils of rich, chocolaty loam over almost vertical sheets of rock. The cracks between the rock have filled with soil, providing passage for the vine roots and free drainage – the ideal environment for low yielding Shiraz vines. Spiced blue and black fruits leading the nose, intertwined with high class oak. On entry, the palate is all blue and black fruits with integrated oak, then moves into a bunch like spice, married with violets and black pepper, finishing back in the blue compote spectrum.
Jim Barry Description
A pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, the 329 acre Lodge Hill Vineyard is situated on the Eastern Ranges, five kilometres east of the Clare township. Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” However in 1979, Jim Barry planted his first Shiraz in this location, and it has gone on to produce our award winning Lodge Hill Shiraz.
James Suckling: 94 Points
Explosive mulberry fruit is married to a medium body and full vibrant tannins in this compact and energetic Clare Valley Shiraz. Slight sappiness at the long, very fresh finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
Wine Enthusiast: 93 Points
This is plump and fruity without losing the (comparatively) cool climate edge of green peppercorn, toasty spices and lifted acidity. It's full bodied with a touch of chocolate oak showing but with the fruit intensity to balance it out. Should age nicely for the next decade at least.
