Pale yellow. Softly lifted aromas of ripe citrus, light floral tones and its classic marine base note underpinnings within a subtler framework given the nuanced nature of vintage. Leads with a forward, just ripe golden fruited body, with coiled intensity, spine and length. Finishes with a subtle yet firm persistence. It has much to offer now but will undoubtedly age on along an intriguing path.
Kistler Description
Marine loam heavily influenced by a stony vein that transects our blocks. Bottled since 1986. Located in the southern reach of the Sonoma Valley, where it meets the Sonoma Coast and Carneros appellations. Our portion of the vineyard is a marine loam heavily influenced by a stony vein that transects our blocks. Produces a Chardonnay with lovely weighted base tones, tones of sun kissed orchard fruit and a sublime rich nature that is consistently threaded with and supported by an energetic acid core.
James Suckling: 98 Points
Candied lemons, pineapple rind and hints of toasted oak. Some minerals, pie crust and caramel. It’s full-bodied and lightly oily, yet tangy at the same time. Hints of peach skin. Some flintiness underneath. Intriguing wine. Drinkable now, but needs two or three years to develop.
Wine Spectator: 96 Points
An impressive white, with dense notes of grilled peach, dried mango, lemon cream and honeysuckle at the core, plus grace notes of caramelized pineapple, orange blossoms, lime sherbet and candied ginger. A fresh thread of acidity gives the flavors plenty of vibrancy. Details of salted melon and lemon verbena emerge on the finish.
Vinous: 96 Points
The 2022 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is ample and creamy in the glass, with striking nuance. A vivid and expressive wine, the Durell marries brightness with textural resonance. Citrus confit, white flowers, spice, tangerine peel and mint fill out the layers. There's a lot to like.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
The 2022 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is delicate and tinkly. At this early stage, it sits low in the glass, focused on flint, iodine and candle smoke rather than its youthful lemon, pear and citrus blossom aromas. The light-bodied palate balances a gently creamy texture with bright, mouthwatering acidity. It features pure, saline-tinged flavors and has a long, perfumed finish.
