Green-tinged to pale yellow. Lifted lemongrass, juicy-expressive almost tangerine like citrus, herbs and pink salts fill the bouquet. A broad ribbon of palate coating stone fruits threaded by a strong line of natural acidity lends a counterpoint to the umami leaning nature of the wine. A classic rendition of being weighted without being heavy from the newest addition to our lineup of site driven Chardonnays. We’re excited to see where this vineyard goes from here given the presence of this inaugural bottling.
Kistler Description
A western subset of deep Goldridge sandy loam that allows the vines great purchase. Stock Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay, a wine that hails from a site two ridges in from the coast in western Sonoma County. Sitting atop the southern reaches of the coastal range that look east to the Mayacamas and west to the winds and fogs of the Pacific. It’s a site of betwixt and between, being influenced by both the rising heat of the Santa Rosa plain and the cooling from the ocean. The wine is marked by a distinct sense of salinity, and piercing, precise fruit tones with a deep sense of concentration and extract buoyed by strong natural acids.
James Suckling: 97 Points
Lots of Meyer lemons, dried seaweed, heather and mussel shells on the nose. Medium-bodied with density and firmness. Plenty of tightness and length. Love this new wine. Fresher and more linear than other sites. Drink or hold.
Wine Advocate: 96 Points
The Stock Ranch Chardonnay is a brand-new wine from a site Kistler first planted in 2016. Located on a ridge at 800 feet above the Bohemian Highway just north of the town of Occidental, it's influenced by both heat from Sonoma Valley and fog and coastal breezes from the Pacific Ocean. Since the beginning, this new site "had a pretty distinct personality," says winemaker Jason Kesner. Now, "The vines are mature, and it continues to raise its hand and ask to be noticed in the cellar." The 2022 Chardonnay Stock Ranch is detailed, dynamic and expressive. It opens with pure scents of saline and seashell, grapefruit and tangerine oil, white pepper and spice. The palate is arresting with its pure, ripe citrus and honey-nut layers and luxuriously silky texture. It's lent energy and a shimmery feel by a taut spine of acidity and finishes with tremendous length.
Vinous: 96 Points
The 2022 Chardonnay Stock Ranch is a new wine from Kistler. It emerges from a site near Occidental, on the border with the West Sonoma Coast. Deep, bold and luscious, the 2022 stands out from the rest of the wines in this range because of its textural depth and overall intensity. At the same time, the Stock Ranch has plenty of energy and overall structure. It's one of my favorites in the range.
