Color purplish red and quite dense. The nose is mature with traces of berries, both red and black. On the palate the approach is of amazing freshness. The structure though powerful does not overwhelm the evident aromas. Surely, this second wine will surprise by its greatness!
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion Description
Similar in style and elegance to its elder, the Château Haut-Brion red, this second wine brings together all the unique attributes of a fine wine, while reaching maturity more quickly. This wine has carried the name Château Bahans Haut-Brion since the first years of the twentieth century and was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion beginning with the 2007 vintage, as a tribute to Clarence Dillon, who acquired the property in 1935.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2008 Clarence Haut-Brion has a clean and fresh bouquet with hints of damp loamy soil and iris interwoven into the red berry fruit. There is something very "pastoral" about the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, well balanced with decent depth. It is not overly complex but it conveys a sense of energy and there is a palpable saline note that lingers on the aftertaste. This is a real turn up for the books, far surpassing my own expectations.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion: The super 2008 (45% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc) exhibits soft, ripe tannins as well as copious black cherry and loamy soil notes intermixed with notions of smoke and roasted herbs. It is a beautifully pure, deep, already delicious and complex wine that should drink nicely for 10-12 years.
Wine Enthusiast: 91 Points
Under its new name, the second wine of Haut-Brion is fruity, soft, rounded. The character is of blackcurrant and juice, finishing with a fine fresh lift.
James Suckling: 90 Points
The second wine of Haut-Brion. Very pretty, subtle tannins, with hints of dried fruits and tobacco. Medium-to-full body with integrated tannins.
