Les Grands Epenots is slightly more delicate than many Pommards because of the drier subsoil in this parcel. The wine has intense aromas and flavors of red fruit, musk and game on maturity. It should be cellared for 5 years before opening and will develop in the bottle for 20 to 25 years.
Louis Jadot Description
The commune of Pommard produces only red wines, and has no Grands Crus. Grands Epenots is one of two parcels under the name Les Epenots, situated in the north of the commune on 62 acres of clay and calcareous soil. The word Epenots comes from the French épines, referring to the spiny bushes that once surrounded the vineyard. In winemaking, Pinot Noir grapes are fermented in tanks for up to 4 weeks, and then the wine is matured for 12 to 15 months in oak barrels before bottling.
James Suckling: 95 Points
The stunning wild-blackberry nose pulls you into this medium-to full-bodied Pommard that's brimming with fruit and has a stack of fine tannins. Lots of drive and minerality, but not a trace of the dryness that this appellation is famous for.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
Notes of sweet spices, wild berries, licorice, loamy soil and smoke introduce the 2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Grand Epenots (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine, with a deep core of fruit and plenty of chewy tannin.
Vinous: 91 Points
The 2020 Pommard Grands Epenots 1er Cru has quite an opulent, almost Volnay-like bouquet with small macerated red cherries, blood orange and light graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and grippy, clean fruit but for me, a little conservative on the finish compared to say, some of Jadot's impressive Beaune Premier Crus.
