Louis Jadot Description
Volnay lies near the center of the Côte de Beaune and produces only red wines, with 26 Premiers Crus. In parallel to the way the character of Chambolle-Musigny wines compare to other wines from the Côte de Nuits, wines from the commune of Volnay show the most delicacy, elegance and finesse of wines within the Cote de Beaune. With optimal southeast exposures, the vineyards have soil that is extremely thin and chalky, high in calcium content, producing the lightest, most delicate wines. The strip below, where most of the Premiers Crus are located, has soil with much less chalk and a thin iron-rich layer over firmly structured subsoil.
James Suckling: 94 Points
Ripe, generous and velvety with lively acidity, this is an impressive Volnay that retains the light-footedness of this appellation, in spite of the extreme vintage. Stacks of fine tannins and this side of the wine builds at the highly structured finish. Excellent freshness. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.
Vinous: 94 Points
The 2020 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru has a well-defined and quite precise bouquet, perhaps more so compared to the Mitans and the Sanenots. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins, a fine bead of acidity, vibrant and fresh with a slightly candied finish. There is something very seductive and more-ish about this Volnay - excellent.
Wine Spectator: 92 Points
A supple red, with core flavors of cherry, raspberry and plum fruit shaded by vanilla, sweet spices and a vegetal note. Firms up, with chalky tannins marking the vibrant finish.
Burghound: 92 Points
Outstanding
This is certainly ripe yet still reasonably fresh with its aromas of red cherry, violet, anise and discreet earth wisps. While there is good if not special concentration to the still notably powerful medium-bodied flavors, there is also a bit more refinement than usual, all wrapped in a youthfully austere and saline-inflected finale. What this lacks, at least presently, is first-rate depth but Clos de la Barre is, typically anyway, a wine that benefits substantially from bottle aging.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre Monopole (Maison Louis Jadot) opens in the glass with notes of sweet red berries, orange rind, peonies, cinnamon and cloves. Medium to full-bodied.
