Philip Togni Description
Philip Togni Vineyard Cabernet is a very ageworthy Margaux-type blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet franc and Petit Verdot. Each year we hold back a portion of the newly-bottled wine to re-release when it is ten, twenty and thirty years old.
The estate Cabernet is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with about 15% Merlot and Petit Verdot, cofermented. Vineyards are volcanic soils with some granite, quartz and clay. Aged in about 40% new Bordeaux barrels with the rest being 1 year old.
Wine Spectator: 96 Points
#14 in WS Top 100 Wines of 2022 - This is very much alive, sporting a wide array of sweet bay leaf, savory and menthol notes, along with zesty raspberry, red currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Built on acidity as much as grippy, tar-laced tannins, this leaves a mouthwatering feel on the long finish. A beautiful version of the throwback style. Best from 2025 through 2040.
Vinous: 96 Points
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classy, sophisticated wine that shows the more restrained side of the year and this site. I imagine the 2019 will flesh out in time. Bright acids, red-toned fruit, dried herbs, mint and silky tannins convey finesse more than power.
Wine Advocate: 95 Points
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classic Togni wine, meant to be laid down for at least a decade and capable of aging well for 20 years beyond that in a cool cellar. Hints of green olive and thyme add savory nuance to the raspberry and cassis shadings on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated into a dense, streamlined shape that throws off waves of dusty tannins, buffered by hints of cedar and vanilla, with lingering cassis notes on the finish.
