Château Le Gay traces its origins to the mid 1850’s under the ownership of the Greloud family. Then ‘Domaine du Gay’, the property was divided into two separate estates - Château Lafleur and Château de Gay - to settle a question of succession. After the First World War both estates passed into the hands of the Robin sisters, Marie and Thérèse, who oversaw operations for almost 60 years. In 2002 Catherine Péré-Vergé, proprietor of nearby Châteaux La Violette and Montviel frequently referred to as “La Dame de Pomerol” for her commitment to the appellation, purchased the property. Today, her son Henri Parent carries on her legacy as director of Les Vignobles de Péré-Vergé.
Chateau Le Gay Description
Vincent Bernard manages the vineyards at Château Le Gay, with pruning adapted to each vine, de-budding and green harvesting carried out if necessary, and leaf thinning performed twice per season to open up the canopy. The grapes are hand-harvested and double sorted. Once crushed and destemmed, the must undergoes a 5-7 day cold soak. Until the 2014 harvest, the wine was fermented in large wooden vats; the new regimen will use new oak barrels to allow for parcel-byparcel fermentations. Half of the wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months, the first 3 of which it spends on its lees.
James Suckling: 97 Points
The complex aromas of brambleberries and fresh herbs such as lemongrass and Italian basil come through beautifully here, giving a liveliness and focus. Medium-bodied with firm and silky tannins and a racy and refined finish. Tight. Really lovely. More elegant and thoughtful than in the past.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2022 Le Gay is a floral, effusive Pomerol. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely silkiness, the 2022 is a charmer. Crushed flowers, bright-red toned fruit and hints of spice open nicely. Le Gay is vinified entirely in barrel, and yet the oak imprint is not at all dominant. Time in the glass releases a whole range of sweet floral accents that add an exotic flair. This is a very pretty and distinctive wine.
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
Not shy with the toast, this offers a layer of mocha and açaí paste draped over fresher flavors of raspberry and red currant coulis. The fruit shows persistence through the finish, but this seems more about power than range or freshness. Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
The 2022 Le Gay offers up aromas of rich cassis, menthol and toasty new oak, followed by a full-bodied, rich and rather muscular palate framed by sweet, liberally extracted tannins that assert themselves on the finish. While this remains quite a chunky, stylized wine, defined by its fermentation in new oak barriques, it is comparatively restrained for this estate in such an extreme vintage.
