The Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is inextricably linked to the Grand Cru vineyard of Musigny—in some eyes the pinnacle of Pinot Noir—a wine that should be both complete and profound but never heavy: ‘majesty itself’ claims Clive Coates.
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Description
Many domaines in Burgundy can trace their roots back over 100 years, but only a handful can claim more than 200 years of history. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé can trace a line back over 550 years, to 1450 and the Chambolle vines of one Jean Moisson.
Highly regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle Musigny, today the domaine is headed by its 20th generation – Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, the granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé.
Vinous: 97 Points
The 2020 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a wine I was not sure about from barrel, but it certainly proves its mettle with a stellar showing here. This was Vincent Millet's final vintage. It is a lucid ruby/purple in color. This is opulent and ripe, possibly later-picked, a soupcon of exotic fruit - cassis and boysenberry jam, crushed violet and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with iodine-tinged black fruit. This is a bold, assertive "statement wine" that lacquers the mouth. There's a lot packed into this wine, and I strongly suspect it will be applauded with time.
Burghound: 97 Points
This too is so densely colored that it is opaque. As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it's less expressive, more complex and more densely fruited as well. There is even better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the chiseled, hugely long, impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades.
