Joseph Drouhin Description
95pts from John Gilman: A couple of years ago the Drouhins switched suppliers in Charmes-Chambertin and the wine has jumped up in quality as a result, making this now one of the best-kept grand cru secrets in their stellar lineup. The 2017 Charmes is flat out stunning, delivering great purity and aromatic complexity in its bouquet of black cherries, cassis, grilled meats, dark soil tones, woodsmoke, mustard seed and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core with sappy fruit. The finish is long, ripely tannic and utterly seamless, with great focus and grip, excellent mineral drive and lovely lift and backend energy. The 2017 Charmes included thirty percent whole clusters this year and was still in barrel in November. Great juice. 2025-2075+.
James Suckling: 96 Points
Aromas of plums, smoke, lightly grilled meat and ripe, spicy fruit. Full-bodied, round and chewy with layers of fruit and a long, flavorful finish. Shows depth and richness. Extremely intense and persistent for the vintage. Drink after 2022.
Wine Spectator: 94 Points
Elegant, with intensity to the black cherry, black currant and violet flavors, accented by flashes of licorice and oak spice. The overall impression is both complex and charming. Shows fine harmony and length. Best from 2022 through 2040.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on September 9 and 15 and includes 25% to 30% whole clusters. It has an exuberant, intense bouquet of macerated small black cherries and blueberry, hints of violet developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite glossy compared to the Corton Grand Cru, and offers layers of blackberry and blueberry laced with white pepper toward the finish. I would have liked more mineral expression to come through, but maybe it just needs bottle age
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru exhibits aromas of red cherries, potpourri, citrus rind and creamy new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and expressive, with an exuberant core of succulent, mouthwatering fruit that largely conceals a fine-grained framing of tannin. Giving and fruit-driven, this will drink well in its youth.
