Beaune Theurons is considered one of the finest Premiers Crus in the commune. Its aromatic bouquet, full body, fine structure and generous fruit culminate in a lingering finish. This wine will develop favorably in the bottle for 10 to 15 years.
Domaine Gagey
Louis Jadot Description
The vineyards of the Beaune appellation include 36 Premiers Crus, thanks to their situation on sloping hillsides well exposed to the sun. Les Theurons consists of four vineyard parcels on the slope above the city of Beaune, at the dividing line between the lighter northern and the fuller southern Premiers Crus. The Pinot Noir fruit is fermented in vats for up to one month, and then the wine is matured in oak barrels for 12 to 15 months before bottling.
Vinous: 93 Points
The 2020 Beaune Les Theurons 1er Cru has a much more introverted bouquet compared to the Greeves, with an attractive marine element, hints of kelp and shucked oyster shell percolating through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine line of acidity, lightly spiced with a detailed and quite peppery finish. Excellent.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
Revealing aromas of cherries, sweet berries, warm spices and raw cocoa, the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Theurons (Domaine Gagey) is medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit underpinned by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully chewy finish.
Burghound: 91 Points
Outstanding
This is relatively restrained in the context of the vintage and while ripe, it's less so than a number of wines in the range with its notes of both red and dark cherry liqueur along with floral and exotic tea nuances. This rich middleweight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel thanks to the solid mid-palate density while displaying a mix of refinement and punch on the dusty, youthfully austere and moderately structured if mildly warm finale. This is very Theurons in character with its graceful and balanced palate feel that should repay mid to even longer-term cellaring.
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
Boasts black cherry and black currant fruit accented by earth and a touch of chocolate. Offers beefy tannins that lurk in the background, while the dense structure clamps down on the finish.
