This deeply colored wine has a blackberry, prune and black currant aroma that acquires a muskiness with age. Tannic and supple, it will develop for 8 to 12 years in the bottle.
Domaine Gagey
Louis Jadot Description
Marsannay is the northernmost commune of the Côte d’Or, and was granted its appellation in 1987, the first to cover red, white and rosé wines. In winemaking, the Pinot Noir grapes are fermented for about 4 weeks in oak vats, then matured in oak barrels for 15 months before bottling.
Wine Spectator: 91 Points
Spicy, with black cherry, blackberry, graphite and vegetal flavors allied to dense, grainy texture. Pure, gaining detail and definition as this plays out on the long aftertaste.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
Aromas of rich blackberry and cassis fruit mingled with hints of licorice and peonies preface the 2020 Marsannay Clos du Roy (Domaine Gagey), a medium to full-bodied, lively wine with an ample core of fruit and youthfully chewy structuring tannins.
Burghound: 90 Points
Outstanding
Distinctly restrained aromas include those of red cherry, raspberry and rose petal, all of which is trimmed in subtle earth and spice characters. While there is only average density to the nicely detailed and attractively textured flavors that exhibit reasonably good depth and persistence on the balanced finale, you don't have the feeling that there is anything other than just the right amount. This is one of those wines that will very likely be unnoticed or, as the French are wont to say, passe à côté (literally pass to the side but more accurately, pass under the radar or be easily missed) in the sense that it isn't flashy but given 7 to 10 years, it should be a gem. One to buy in quantity provided you intend to cellar it.
