This is an elegant yet fruity wine, with vanilla and violet aromas.
Louis Jadot Description
Volnay lies near the center of the Côte de Beaune and produces only red wines, with 26 Premiers Crus. In parallel to the way the character of Chambolle-Musigny wines compare to other wines from the Côte de Nuits, wines from the commune of Volnay show the most delicacy, elegance and finesse of wines within the Cote de Beaune. With optimal southeast exposures, the vineyards have soil that is extremely thin and chalky, high in calcium content, producing the lightest, most delicate wines. The strip below, where most of the Premiers Crus are located, has soil with much less chalk and a thin iron-rich layer over firmly structured subsoil.
Wine Enthusiast: 95 Points
Lifted and blossomy on the nose, this full-bodied, powerful Pinot Noir balances rich blackberry and raspberry flavors with an earthen, smoky minerality. Full and rounded on the palate but braced by a zesty peel of acidity, it's a bold yet stately expression of an exceptionally ripe vintage in Volnay.
James Suckling: 93 Points
Lovely black-cherry nose with some rooty nuances. Generous body with plenty of fruit wrapped around the solid core of moderately dry tannin. Bold and crisp finish.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2019 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru demonstrates more finesse and coherence compared to the
Santenots, offering pure dark cherry and boysenberry fruit mixed with light violet aromas. The lush,
generous palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky-smooth texture and layers of black cherry
and cassis toward the seductive finish. Just very...Volnay.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre Monopole (Maison Louis Jadot) is more structured than the Mitans, bursting with aromas of plums, candied peel, spices and toasty new oak. Medium-bodied, chalky and a little reserved on this showing, I expect it to round out nicely.
Burghound: 90 Points
A moderately ripe yet still quite fresh nose mixes notes of red and blue pinot fruit with those of earth, spice and anise. The medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture on the robust and powerful bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that is youthfully austere and a bit warm but not lean. As is usually the case, this is a muscular but not rustic Volnay 1er.
