Louis Michel Description
This wine comes from four separate plots on the Butteaux slopes, in the western part of the Montmains valley. They are the most distant from the winery, but only 2 km away. The clays here are compact and contain marl. The wines made from these vines express great complexity on the palate. These are wines of character, excellent for enthusiasts.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
Issuing from clay parcels rich with fossils, Michel’s 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux exhibits aromas of peach, tangerine zest and dried white flowers. More youthfully introverted than Forêts, it is medium to full-bodied, built around a spine of racy acidity and with ample structuring extract, concluding with a saline finish.
Burghound: 90 Points
There is an abundance of the hallmark mineral reduction nuances adding breadth to the cool but ripe aromas of sea breeze and white orchard fruit. There is again solid concentration to the bigger-bodied and more voluminous, indeed even opulent, flavors that aren't especially mineral driven but do offer the muscularity and power that one expects from a fine Butteaux on the appealingly dry finale.
Vinous: 90 Points
The 2023 Chablis Butteaux 1er Cru has a perfumed and quite floral bouquet, with touches of yellow flowers infusing the citrus fruit and a little more intensity than the preceding Forets. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. It's a little honeyed in texture, but there is some tension and good weight on the finish. The 2023 is promising.
